'Nature Positive' Bill dumped
12th February 2025
By Mark Richards
The Federal Government has announced the shelving of its Nature Positive Bill. (Contrary to its 2022 election promise)
A number of articles have been written in response to the disappointing news.
One perspective by Professor O'Connor, a Biodiversity Council member, highlights the negative impact on our economy when we fail to protect a functioning environment.
Some of the data he dives into supporting his thesis that 'the majority of our economy is heavily reliant on nature' includes:
- Tourism sector, some $40 Billion spent by international tourists - with our 'Natural Environment' being a primary drawcard.
- Agriculture sector, some $88 Billion, would struggle to operate without healthy soils, pollinators, natural pest controls and water filtration that only nature provides.
This is scary -
The World Economic Forum flagged in their 2025 Global Risk report that four human-caused environmental problems, including extreme weather, loss of biodiversity and collapse of ecosystems, are the top threats to the global economy over the medium to long term, which they define as just 10 years.
What is Nature Positive?
Its goals:
- Halt and reverse nature loss
- Increase the health, abundance, diversity, and resilience of species, populations, and ecosystems
- Ensure that nature is visibly and measurably on the path of recovery by 2030
- Ensure that thriving ecosystems and nature-based solutions continue to support future generations by 2050
