Film night - Great Southern Reef / Great Australian Bight

Many thanks for your interest and concern for the marine environment of Southern Australia.

Whilst many are aware of the Great Barrier Reef, few Australians are fully aware of the importance of the Great Southern Reef.
The Great Southern Reef (GSR) is Australia's extensive and interconnected system of temperate reefs, predominantly characterised by kelp forests.
Spanning over 8,000 km of coastline across southern Australia, the GSR encompasses a diverse range of habitats from shallow rocky reefs to deep sponge gardens extending from the western coast of Western Australia to the eastern seaboard.

Whilst the Great Barrier Reef is between 16km to 160 kms from the mainland, when you step in, swim or surf the waters of the Fleurieu Peninsula, you are in the Great Southern Reef.

 We are delighted to have Stefan Andrews, Marine Biologist and Co-founder of the Great Southern Reef Foundation, who will present Whiterock, a 35-minute film of the devastation being caused to the Giant Kelp Foret of the GSR.

Peter Owen, Director of the Wilderness Society (SA) will take us on a journey over 20 years to protect the Great Southern Bight. The Wilderness Society has worked in collaboration to deliver a highly protected land and sea conservation estate across the Nullarbor and Great Australian Bight. Their successful campaign to stop the fossil fuel industry expanding into this extraordinary part of Australia also helped to secure a policy commitment from the South Australian Government to support World Heritage Listing for the region.  

Peter and Stefan will form a panel for Q&A with the audience.
