Saturday, June 21st - 2025 Community Planting Festival
It's next weekend. Are you coming?
This is big. Help plant 2500 indigenous seedlings we've grown at our 'pop-up nursery'. Rotary Victor Harbor will be providing a free BBQ for planters.
We've got the planting team from Hindmarsh Island Landcare Group bringing their gear and pre-drilling all the holes for the seedlings this week. This will make it very easy to plant. Don't forget to ask your family and friends to come along. For logistics, please ensure you, your friends and family register

Our 1st AGM - Mon 7th July 5.15pm
Okay, we know AGMs have a reputation for being boring.
Not ours, it will be really quick and over before you can name 6 native animal and plant species.
Then enjoy our engaging guest speaker, Dr. Tim Johnson from Treenet.
Treenet is a not-for-profit dedicated to improving Australia's urban forest.
There's still time to nominate yourself for the management committee - just pop an email to nature@biodiversityvictor.org.au
Our quorum is a minimum of 10 members present together with proxies.
Not able to attend, you can download, fill out, scan and send your proxy form to nature@biodiversityvictor.org.au
Who can vote? Check out the attached Agenda. With our recent change to removing membership fees, it effectively makes anyone who has joined able to vote.
Check out the Annual Report crammed full of information.

The Community Biodiversity Nursery Hub

By the time of the AGM, we should have information from the CVH that they had decided on the site for the Community Biodiversity Nursery Hub - fingers crossed.
Bio-VH will be invited to participate in design considerations.
Industrial scale pollution event Hindmarsh River
Sadly, with the rain since late May, there have been several major 'sediment run-off' events from the development site near the Ring Road. Heavily laden clay sediment has travelled several kilometres downstream. The potential impact is significant degradation of the river ecosystem with fine particles clouding the water (increasing turbidity), smothering aquatic life and altering habitat.
We and Friends of Hindmarsh River Estuary responded quickly sending reports to EPA, City of Victor Harbor, Hills & Fleurieu Landscapes Board and our local member David Basham. Via social media, we reached out to our caring community, encouraging them to also make similar reports.
We understand an Aquatic Biologist has been contracted to undertake further testing and general water testing to determine the impacts and required action moving forward. In addition, a sediment and erosion expert consultant has been engaged to work on a longer-term strategic plan to control sediment run-off.
Whilst we would have hoped a large professional development group would have understood the impacts of sediment run-off and implemented mitigation strategies right from the get-go - this has not been the case.
This highlights the importance of groups like Biodiversity Victor Harbor and why as many community members as possible should be linked to our network, creating a strong and loud voice for the environment.

Biodiversity Victor Harbor membership is now free.
Yep, that's right - free, nix, narder, nothing. Join once now for free and there are no renewal subscriptions or ongoing fees. If you choose at any time in the future to stop being a member, just pop us a quick email.
As from our June general meeting, it was decided to make membership of Biodiversity Victor Harbor absolutely free - moving forward.
Why have we done this? It's important that as many people as possible in our community have the opportunity to be active when it comes to the environment. Whether it's being the eyes and reporting pollution events like the above, sending emails to council, advocating to members of parliament, growing seedlings, planting events or other environmental activities in their part of the community. They need a forum.
And when they all come together, they will form a strong and loud voice for the environment.
It will take a little while to work with the software guys of our website platform to change the system to be 'free membership'. This includes existing memberships. Please bear with us.
